Is it possible to place a flap on a space other than an edge? I want to add ears to an animal hat, but I can’t figure it out.

Hi I am a total beginner in crocheting my gorgeous mother may she rest in peace tried to teach me many times but I was young and unfortunately I didn’t have the patience to do it. So now I’d like nothing more than to be able to do what she did and make her proud. I’m gonna be a grandma for the first time and he is gonna be born within the next two weeks. I started my first project in the only stitch I really remembered my mom teaching me (single crochet.)
